Wrestling History

My sophomore year didn't go so hot for me. I was part-time jv and varsity and I wrestled at 119lbs. My wrestling buddy every practice was Kyle Havener. I didn't take wrestling very serious, coming in as a sophomore not knowing what to expect. Lucky for me I ended up in a stack weight class that year and didn't make it out of districts. Once I saw my brother place in state that year I pushed myself to work harder.

Junior year I wrestled 119lbs again. I was varsity the whole season. I went 18-9. I ended up beating the number two seed in districts and ended up in the finals against Jake Gonzalez. I got a whoopin but I finally got in the newspaper like my brother but it said "like clockwork Jake Gonzalez techs falls Nathan Nakishima" haha! But I was still proud! Then was regionals where I went 2-2 and should have made it to state but ended up a state alternate.

Senior year was one of the best seasons I had wrestled but ended short. I was a captain with Jarrett Tomalin and Ian Staaleson. I wrestled 130lbs and went 25-7. I placed 6th at the Pacific Coast tournament. I also won my first varsity tournament at Emerald Ridge. At districts I wore my lucky Japanese headband but I lost in the finals and ended up on a good side of the bracket for regionals but it ended very quick going 0 and 2 barbeque. I know I just peaked at my best too early in the season and went downhill at the end. But overall I had a fun 3 seasons up at Kentwood and want to thank the coaches and wrestlers who helped me alot!

Coaches' Memories

Nathan was a great guy to have in the practice room who could crack up the team as well as the coaches.  He was extremely tough on the mat with his tilt series, and made an impact on the classes that followed him.  We look forward to seeing him back in the wrestling room as much as possible.
