Conks go 2-0 vs KL, KR; takes 2nd at Jag Invite
The Kentwood Conquerors continued a solid dual meet season, beating Kentlake and Kentridge in duals. The Conks beat the Falcons 42-22 in the much anticipated "Covtown Throwdown," in front of a boisterous and energetic crowd. Pins by Ruben Navejas (103), Greg Smith (171), Jakob Shewey (215), and Nathan Herrick (285) distanced the Conks from their cross-town rival, while big matches from Eric Alonzo (beating a wrestler he had previously lost to at 119) and Chris Beck (nearly got pinned with no time left to win by 1) sealed the deal for Kentwood. Kentwood then traveled to Kentridge to face off against a much-improved Chargers squad. Despite the improvement by yet another rival, Kentwood was able to take home a 39-12 win. Eric Alonzo won yet another big match, beating a very tough Kentridge wrestler at the very end of the match. At the Jag Invite, Kentwood settled for second place despite placing 13 wrestlers in the top 4. 6 wrestlers made the finals, and Kentwood took home 4 champions: Ruben Navejas (103), Eric Alonzo (119), Billy Creighton (130), and Cody Quinn (145). Other placers were: Isaac Pearson (103, 3rd), Brian Polkinghorn (112, 4th), Jonathan Ohashi (119, 2nd to Alonzo), Teddy Zografos (125, 3rd), Hayden Peterson (125, 4th), Chris Beck (3rd, 152), Luke Angevine (2nd, 160), Spencer Brewer (4th, 215), and Nathan Herrick (2nd, 285).

KW loses to Bears, beats Ravens, places 6th at Matman
The week started off in a manner unaccustomed to the Conks in the last couple of years; with a loss. At Tahoma's Alumni night, the Bears foiled Kentwood's more than 2 year winning streak with a 37-27 win. The Conks had their chances, but failed to capitalize in several tight matches. Wins by Ruben Navejas (103), Hayden Peterson (112), and Eric Alonzo got KW off to a good start, but 6 straight losses pretty much sealed Kentwood's fate. A solid win at 160 by Luke Angevine, followed by a gutsy effort by Greg Smith at a supersized 189 pounds that led to a pin kept the Conks in it, but it just wasn't enough. Kentwood followed up this disappointing loss with a dominant 59-6 victory over Auburn-Riverside, losing only two close matches. Pins by Isaac Pearson (103), Teddy Zografos (130), Matt Gordon (140), Matt Herrick (189), and Jakob Shewey (215) led the Conks to the big win. Finally, Kentwood traveled west to the prestigious Central Kitsap Matman Tournament, a tournament that featured 7 of the top 10 teams from the Pacific Coast Tournament. Kentwood ended up in 6th place, despite forfeiting 3 weights. Although Kentwood left with no champions on the night, one of the biggest matches took place in the semifinals as Cody Quinn faced off against returning state champion (and winner over Cody last week) Brandon Yeik of Olympic. Yeik secured an early takedown to go up 2-0, but it was all Quinn after that as Cody scored 14 of the final 15 points of the match. It was a flurry of takedowns and nearfalls that led to the astounding 14-3 victory for Quinn. Overall, Kentwood has started to get better in several positions, and now looks to peak right towards the end of the season. The final list of placers were: Ruben Navejas (2nd, 103), Isaac Pearson (5th, 103), Hayden Peterson (3rd, 112), Billy Creighton (5th, 130), Cody Quinn (2nd, 140), Greg Smith (3rd, 171), and Nathan Herrick (2nd, 285). Kentwood has a match against Kentridge this Wednesday @KR, the ever-so-popular Covtown Throwdown against Kentlake @KW on Thursday, and the Jaguar Invite at Emerald Ridge on Saturday (both Varsity and JV will be wrestling at ER). There has also been a change to the schedule, as the Federal Way match missed due to snow in December has been moved to January 30th, and will also become our new senior night!

KW finishes 3rd at Panther Classic; Dual Wed at Tahoma
The Conks finished just one point behind Kamiak to end up in third place at the Panther Classic at Snohomish High School, despite a lineup not yet at full strength. Kentwood emerged with 10 placers altogether, despite forfeiting 3 weights. Ruben Navejas continued his winning ways, earning another championship at 103 pounds. Cody Quinn came up short in the final against Olympic's returning State Champ Brandon Yeik, to finish in 2nd place at 140 pounds. Hayden Peterson (112) made a valiant run to the finals, but was turned back by Ares Carpio, an extremely tough freshman from Todd Beamer High School. Wrestlers who took 3rd Place were: Teddy Zografos (125), Billy Creighton (130), and R.J. Gilbert (189). Wrestlers who took 5th Place were: Eric Alonzo (119), Jonathan Ohashi (119), Greg Smith (171), Luke Angevine (171), and Jakob Shewey (215). League action picks back up in a major way this Wednesday, as we travel the full 2 miles over to Tahoma High School to face off against the Bears of Tahoma. Tahoma has had a lot of success this year already, and looks to be a "bear" of a dual. This is also Tahoma's Alumni night, with Mat Classic staple Ed Aliverti announcing the dual. There is still no word on whether he will be singing "America, the Beautiful" yet. For more information on the dual, click here.

KW handles KM; 3rd at "Battle," Navejas and Quinn Win
Kentwood started the league dual meet season on the right note, beating a much improved Kent-Meridian wrestling team 54-9 (dual was on 12/10). Pins by Eric Alonzo (119), Teddy Zografos (130), Kolby Crook (152), and Greg Smith (171) helped seal the victory for the Conks. Nathan Herrick gutted out a 3-1 overtime win against a quality opponent to open up his season at heavyweight, while Luke Angevine overcame an early deficit to win 10-9 right at the end of the match. The Conks then traveled to the Canadian border to wrestle in the extremely tough Battle at the Border Tournament (12/13). Kentwood managed to take third place, despite not bringing their full lineup. Ruben Navejas (103) and Cody Quinn (145) both took first place at the Battle. Ruben beat his opponent decisively in the finals 12-1 while Cody earned a quick fall with his signature figure four to the head just 32 seconds into the first round. Billy Creighton (130) added a 4th place, while Hayden Peterson (112) and freshman Jonathon Ohashi (119) both finished in 6th place.

Kentwood places 6 at State, finish 7th; Girls both finish 2nd
Mat Classic XX was an interesting tournament, to say the least, for the Kentwood Wrestling Team. In all, Kentwood placed 6 wrestlers between 3rd and 6th place, good enough to be the 2nd highest number of placers in Kentwood history, ahead of two State Champion teams! But in this crazy tournament, it was nowhere near enough to see the Conks near the top of the podium, relegating them to 7th place with 88 points. In the recorded history of the Mat Classic, 88 points would have placed KW no lower than 4th in any other year. In fact, it would have taken first one time, second or third several times, and fourth a couple of times. This just happened to be an interesting year for team scoring, and Kentwood was left at the tail of a 4 team race for 4th. A lot of wrestlers may have fallen short of their goals on the year, but the coaches are extremely proud of the way they fought through adversity from the start of their careers here. Returning state champion Brandon Rodgers took third place at 119 pounds, losing an extremely close semifinal match to put him in the backdoor, where he won his next two matches. Cody Quinn took 4th place at 135 pounds, getting caught in his first round matchup, but then battled all the way back to reach the consolation finals. Sean Staaleson also took 4th place (215), earning his way to the semis before losing, then reaching the consolation finals by winning his next match. Ruben Navejas took 5th place at 103, losing a hard-fought OT match to close friend Josh Martinez of Oak Harbor. Ruben finished his year with only two losses, but ended his season on a win. Derek Lipp also placed 5th (112), avenging his loss in the quarterfinals to Zach Holland of Evergreen, by beating him 5-2 for 5th place. Nick Zografos placed 6th at 152 pounds, earning his way to the semifinals before losing an extremely close match to runner-up Kyle Foster of Rogers 6-4. Nick earned himself quite a shiner in that match, which led to some tough matchups the rest of the way for him (view the picture page to see his black eye up close!). Josh Kutterer (135) had the unfortunate luck of meeting up with teammate Cody Quinn in the backdoor, which hurt his chances of placing. Hayden Peterson (112), met the same fate as Josh, but to teammate Derek Lipp. Nathan Herrick fell one match short of placing as well at 215 pounds. Ryan Patterson (140), hit a tough draw, but battled as he always does. Lance Larsen (160) never did get fully healthy, but still wrestled well until he was caught in both matches. Billy Creighton (125) and Joe Angevine (171) both got some great experience at state that will hopefully carry over to next year when they are seniors. In the girls' state meet, both Antonia Navejas (119) and Jolene Crook-Meyers (135) took 2nd place in a much improved state meet. These two girls combined for a team score good enough for 5th in the girls' tournament! Congrats girls! The coaches would like to congratulate the wrestlers on an incredible season that included several tournament wins, an undefeated dual meet season, an SPSL League Tournament Championship, a Region II Championship, and a 7th place finish at state. We appreciate all the work that the seniors have put in over their 4 years here, and look forward to seeing the impact from it in the years to come.

Conks beat Bears for League Title! Seniors go undefeated! The Conqueror wrestling team finished an undefeated 7-0 as SPSL North League Champions for a second straight season thanks to a 47-18 blowout against Tahoma. The Conks won 10 of the 14 matchups on the night, several by relatively close scores. The action started at 103 when frosh phenom Ruben Navejas received a forfeit. Hayden Peterson squeaked out a 3-2 victory against a fired up Bear at 112 pounds. At 119, returning state champion Brandon Rodgers worked a 9-1 major decision against his defensive opponent. After consecutive losses at 125 and 130 pounds, the Conks ripped off 5 consecutive wins starting with Josh Kutterer's nail-biting 7-6 win at 135 pounds. Cody Quinn controlled his Bear opponent with a relatively close but dominant 5-2 decision at 140 pounds. The unquestioned match of the night was Ryan Patterson's thrilling first round stick of this year's Pac Coast Champion at 145 pounds. After giving up the first takedown (and a full weight class), Patterson got his opponent on his hip, wrapped up his head and got underneath his arm for an extremely tight half. He left the mat with pin, and with the entire crowd on their feet. This was Ryan's first win in a green singlet, as documented in the article in the Seattle Times about KW's league championship and Ryan's match. Moving on to 152, Nick Zografos was nails on his feet, crushing his Tahoma opponent 19-6. Tahoma then forfeited to returning state placer Lance Larsen at 160 pounds, and Luke Angevine wrestled well losing a tough one at 171 to his highly ranked Bear opponent. Brother Joe lost to a much bigger opponent, but the Conks finished the night with a pin at 215 from Sean Staaleson and a win by forfeit for Nathan Herrick. The night started off as Senior Night, and the seniors definitely delivered by not losing a match at any level on the night. The coaches would like to thank the seniors for all of their hard work over the past 4 years. Not only have the seniors brought our program to the two of the three league championships in KW history, but are an incredible class of young men who we will miss very much. You guys have done Kentwood proud, but your job is not done yet! Thanks to the following seniors, and their parents, who have done so much for our program: Ben Apo (285), Erik Bala (119), Tom Creighton (160), Tony Creveling (145), Kyle Faulkner (152), Josh Kutterer (130), David Laird (145), Lance Larsen (160), Josh Loveland (189), Michael Montgomery (285), Ryan Patterson (140), Brandon Rodgers (119), Ryan Scarff (145), Sean Staaleson (215), Chase Valentine (215), Colton Werner (119), and Nick Zografos (152).

Kentwood clips Eagles, 65-6; Battle at Border Fri-Sat
The Kentwood Wrestling Team starting off the league dual season with a decisive 65-6 blowout of a very young Federal Way team. Wrestlers appeared to shed some of the rust that plagued them in last week's dual, which led to winning 12 of the 14 matches on the night. Pins by Billy Creighton (130), Josh Kutterer (135), Ryan Patterson (140), Joe Angevine (189), and Derek Lipp (112) as well as technical falls by Tony Creveling (145) and Nick Zografos (152). But the match of the night was turned in by a very bloody Teddy Zografos (119). Teddy wrestled one of his best matches in the Black and Silver, dominating in all phases of the match which led to a 14-2 major decision over his FW opponent. Tom Creighton (160) joined his younger brother with a win as well. Kentwood also won by forfeit with Austin Haggin (285), Ruben Navejas (103), and Brandon Rodgers (119). The JV shutout FW with a score of 79-0 as well. The Conks take their Varsity up I-5 nearly to the Canadian Border to compete in the annual "Battle at the Border" at Blaine H.S. This is one of the tougher tournaments around, and returning state champion Brandon Rodgers looks to avenge his only loss of the year last year to state runner-up Jacob Humphreys at 119 pounds. Also in a very tough bracket at 119 is the returning state champion from 2A, Nick Burnham of Black Hills. The JV will drive in the opposite direction to the Franklin Pierce JV tournament. Good luck to all of the wrestlers competing this weekend!

Also, Dee Dee Quinn is holding a Parent Volunteer Meeting at the Quinn's house on Friday November 16th at 5:30. The following day (Sat, Nov. 17th) at 5:00 pm is a Team BBQ at the Quinn's house. If you have any questions about the Parent Volunteer Meeting or the BBQ, please call Dee Dee Quinn at 253-639-7558. Please make sure that all wrestlers are either showering at the school right after practice, or immediately once they get home. It is not only important for your own health, but for the health of our entire team. We hope that all of you are as excited as we are for the 2007-08 season.

History Lesson: Kentwood Wrestling through the years
As Kentwood's 25th anniversary
of its inception approaches, the coaching staff thought it would be
interesting to take a look back at some of the notable and
outstanding performances in Kentwood history. Kentwood has

He soon added a co-head coach to
the program named Lee Reichert, who happens to be the current
Enumclaw wrestling coach. Reichert and Henderson were
responsible for building the program, which reached its pinnacle in
the early 1990's with an improbable three
straight state championships from 1990-1992. Making this
task even harder was their participation in the toughest league in
state. In their three state championship years, KW only won a
league title once; Auburn and Kent-Meridian were state powerhouses
at the time as well. Auburn took 2nd to KW in 1990, and won
the state title in 1994. Kent-Meridian won the state title in
both 1987 and 1989. That is 6 state championships for the SPSL
in the span of 8 years! The state championship teams were led
by several members of the Kentwood team, but no one was as
dominating as three-time state champion
Jason Cleverly. Cleverly was an amazing mat wrestler; his

The team and individual pictures have been moved to Monday, December 4th at 2:30 (be there on time!). Certification is now on Tuesday, December 5th at 4:30 (half an hour before practice as well). In other news, 4 Conquerors made the Washington Wrestling Report's Top Ranked Wrestlers in the November edition, although at some questionable weights. Brandon Rodgers saw his name called at 103, although it appears he will be wrestling 112. Cody Quinn is ranked as the top 119 pound 4A wrestler, but his calling seems to be at either 125 or 130. Nick Zografos looks to be the only ranked wrestler at his actual weight, 145, despite losing last year to an injured knee. Lance Larsen rounds out the 4 at 152 pounds, with his true weight now hovering somewhere around 160 pounds. Congratulations on the recognition guys...now it is time for all of us to show what we can do on the mat!

Attention Alumni, we want to hear from you! +Rodgers Update
Kentwood Wrestling.com is looking to hear from all Alumni throughout the storied history of Kentwood Wrestling! This means wrestlers from the very first class in 1982 to the members of the beasts that won three STRAIGHT state titles in the early 90's to even our recent graduates. We would love to hear how you are doing now and about your memories from your K-Dub days. Follow this link to fill out some information about yourself (including pictured hopefully) or just e-mail Coach Anderson and John.Anderson@kent.k12.wa.us. If there is enough interest, we will report back on what you have been up to since leaving our hallowed wrestling room. We look forward to hearing from all of you! On a different note, Brandon Rodgers put up a great fight at Greco and Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, going 1-2 in both styles. Brandon is one of very few KW wrestlers ever to compete in this exclusive tournament, and the coaches are very proud of his hard work and dedication this summer! Congrats Brandon!

6-30-06 Kent Camp Complete, Champs Crowned; Camp Notes are Up The Kent Wrestling Camp completed its 6th successful year this past Thursday, finishing with its annual culminating tournament. If you are interested in reviewing what you learned in camp, or are just would like to see some great technique, check out the camp notes. The camp had a lot of talented wrestlers attending, including a large contingent from the improving Kentridge team. Final tournament champions were: Group 1- Tanner Heinz, Group 2- Derek Lipp, Group 3- Michael Hedges, Group 4- Paul Dyer (nice hi-c Paul!), Group 5- Colton Werner, Group 6- Matt Gordon, Group 7- Karsten Kutterer, Group 8- Joe Smith, Group 9- Tony Heinz, Group 10- Sam Spieker, Group 11- Michael Christian, Group 12- Kyle Bailey, Group 13- Bryan Cavanaugh, and Group 14 Alex Verhaar. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Heinz who gave the campers and coaches a nice out-of-season snack! The Monarchs, coached by Dan Wright and Eric Werner, outdistanced the surprising Cedar Heights team 249.5 to 238. Meridian crowned 3 champions: Derek Lipp (90), Alex Hough (122), and Daniel Park (220). Mattson took fourth place with 214 points, taking home 4 titles: Hayden Peterson (115), Andy Smith (138), Nathan Herrick (190), and Alex Verhaar (250). The Middle School Page is now updated with final brackets, team scores, and several pictures. If there is a picture that you would like a higher quality version, email John Anderson with the Page and Picture #. The future continues to look bright for the Conquerors with the additions of many outstanding wrestlers from the middle schools. On another note, the tournament ran very smoothly this year due to the help of several incredible individuals. The Kentwood Coaching Staff would like to especially thank the Phillips Family, the Quinn family, the Daniel family, the Delvo family, the Larsen family, the Anderson family, the Sroka family, Kathy Massimino, and of course our wrestlers. We hope that this continues to be a tournament that teams enjoy being at, and because of all of you that it ran well. Thanks for all of your work! 3-29-06 Brackets are up! K-T Middle School Tourn. at 10 am Saturday The Kentwood Conquerors are proud to host this year's Kent Tahoma Middle School Wrestling Championships! This is a great way to check out the next set of superstars before they hit the high school ranks. The tournament starts at 10 am on Saturday (4-1-06), with the finals starting at approximately 4:30 pm. More information can be found on our Middle School page at the top left corner of the site, or by clicking here. There are some youngsters at this tournament who could make a big impact at the next level as early as next year, so don't be afraid to root on a future teammate or scout a future opponent! There will be great food, t-shirts, and programs as well. To get an early look at the brackets, click on the MS icon on the top left. We hope to see you all there! 3-22-06 Rodgers wins all 3 styles; Middle School Tourney help needed Brandon Rodgers captured an elusive 3 style championship at Chehalis this past weekend. Brandon won three 105 pound championships; one in freestyle, one in greco-roman, and one in folkstyle. Brandon has been leading the way with fellow freestylers Stephen Cameron (who participated in two styles this weekend), Cody Quinn, and Joe Allen Reonal. Several KW wrestlers have also been attending the Bear Claw practices at Tahoma Jr. High in addition to those 4 wrestlers. Other wrestlers who have been putting in their time at Bear Claw are: Josh Koopmans, Ryan Patterson, Sean Staaleson, Matt Thake, Eric Bala, R.J. Gilbert, and Lance Larsen. Attention! The Kent Tahoma League Middle School Tournament is coming up on April 1st. We are still in need of wrestlers and parents to help with the event. If you are can help out on that Saturday, please e-mail Coach Sroka or Coach John Anderson. 3-10-06 Quinn cleans up at Banquet; Seniors leave legacy The

3-6-06 Banquet Thurs (3/9) 5:45 pm; Quinn, Cameron, Rodgers excel The Banquet has been officially listed as starting at 5:45 pm this Thursday, March 9th. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance. In the Rhino Open Freestyle tournament this weekend, Cody Quinn picked up where he left off taking home a first place medal at 125 pounds in the Cadet division. Stephen Cameron added to the lightweight trophy case by taking 2nd place among Juniors at 112 pounds, while Brandon Rodgers took third in the Cadet division at 105 pounds. Be sure to check out the photos page, as there are some pictures taken from the past weekend of our guys in action at the FS tournament. We would love to see as many guys get involved in the freestyle season, as it will be beneficial for your wrestling progress. Click the Bear Claw link on the right, or go here to check out the Freestyle club. 2-27-06 Bear Claw on Mon. and Wed.; Banquet March 9th Q: How do you get better at wrestling? A: You wrestle more! The freestyle season starts up tonight at Bear Claw from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, and you can still sign up at the door. The cost of the club is a very reasonable $70. This is your chance to not only get more experience, but also to wrestle with some of the best kids in the area! Two-time state champ Andrew Johnson, three-time state placer Tyler Roshau, and many others will be in attendance. Helping coach with the Tahoma staff is former champion Michael Johnson, who only lost two high school matches! There will be kids from all skill levels however, so it is a great way to get some practice time in with some really fun guys. Brandon Rodgers spent the past weekend with the Bear Claw team at the Hawkeye Invite in Anacortes, and left with a first place medal! Congrats Brandon! To view practice and tournament dates (there is a tournament every weekend that you can go to and have the Bear Claw coaches with you) either go to the Bear Claw link on the right side of the page, or click here to go directly to the schedule (for March). On a different note, the banquet celebrating this year's season will be on Thursday, March 9th in the cafeteria. The time will be set soon, so make sure to check back for more info! 2-21-06 One-man show Quinn 5th; KW's first freshman placer ever Kentwood only brought one wrestler to state, but freshman Cody Quinn was up to the challenge taking home a hard-fought 5th place medal. Cody started the day with a senior from Eastmont named Joel Robbins. Robbins proved to be too much in Cody's first match, soundly beating Cody 10-1. Cody rebounded with a 7-0 drubbing of fellow freshman Jared Kilcup of Heritage, and then a 2nd round pin of sophomore Kamren Bitney of Puyallup to end the first day and secure Cody a medal and a place in the Kentwood Hall of Fame. Cody advanced in his first match on Saturday, outlasting senior Gabe Gassman of Curtis, 4-2. This put him in a consolation match with Robbins again. Cody faired much better this time, but still lost 4-2. This put Quinn into the consolation final match for 5th and 6th place, against phenom freshman Sam Ottow from Monroe. Many predicted Ottow to get to the finals, and some even predicted Ottow to win a highly contested 112 pound weight class. Ottow earned an 11-7 win over Cody last week, but Cody could not be denied in a triumphant 8-6 win over Ottow and a 5th place finish at one of the toughest weights at the tournament. The real "phenom" turned out to be Quinn with a 5th place finish as the first freshman state participant and first freshman state placer in Kentwood's storied history. By placing, Cody also kept the KW streak of placers alive for the 18th year. Congratulations Cody! We are all really proud of you! Also, thanks must go out to all of the wrestlers who stuck it out until the end, giving Cody fresh wrestling partners to work with. Make sure to keep posted for freestyle, camp, and banquet information! 2-13-06 Region 1 K.O.'s Conks; Only Cody Quinn survives A rough Friday doomed the Conks, with all 9 wrestlers entering Saturday with at least one loss. For some, a difficult draw ended their tournament, while others were done in by injuries. Only 1 Conqueror escaped a grueling Region 1, and that was freshman Cody Quinn. His path was no free ride either, as he had to deal with one of the top-ranked freshmen in the entire state, Sam Ottow of Monroe. Cody lost 11-7 to Ottow, but a couple of calls that went Ottow's way help secure that victory. Cody then faced Sam Bauer of Enumclaw in a loser-out match, which Cody grinded out 4-2 despite some last second heroics from Bauer. Another win over highly touted Kevin Tao of Tahoma got Cody into the 3rd/4th match against John Baldwin of Kamiak, which Quinn won handily. Seniors Shawn Larsen and Peter Logar placed 6th to make them alternates to the state meet, while sophomore Brandon Rodgers placed 7th and senior Rusty Phillips placed 8th. 2-6-06 Conks impress on way to 3rd at SPSL Tourney; 9 advance The Kentwood Wrestling Team took 3rd place at the toughest division tournament in the state over this past weekend. They finished ahead of projected top 10 teams Auburn Riverside and Tahoma, outdistancing both teams by more than 75 points. The Conks also finished more than 50 points ahead of the Cinderella Kentlake team. Kentwood advanced 9 wrestlers to the Region I tournament (click for info) at Jackson H.S. in Mill Creek, which is a two-day tournament spanning over Feb. 10 and 11. In all Kentwood placed 14 of the 26 wrestlers it brought to the tournament, and will bring 4 alternates to regionals in addition to the 9 already set in the tournament. Those 9 wrestlers are: Brandon Rodgers (3rd), Cody Quinn (2nd), John Michael Daniel (3rd), Josh Kutterer (4th), Dan Glomski (4th), Shawn Larsen (2nd), Joel Phillips (4th), Rusty Phillips (4th), and Peter Logar (2nd). The other placers were: Stephen Cameron (5th), Tony Creveling (6th), Lance Larsen (5th), Alex Phillips (5th), and Justin Shewey (5th). This marks the Conquerors highest finish at the league tournament in several years. Region I brackets are now available online at Washington Wrestling Report. ***Note: We are staying at the Days Inn on Everett Mall Way, directions from KW to the hotel are here.
1-26-06 KW trumps Royals on Senior Night, 72-6; Postseason Next The Seniors of Kentwood left their last dual meet the same way they started their careers here at Kentwood--victorious. In their first dual meet as Kentwood wrestlers in 2002 against Auburn-Riverside, Kentwood won a hard-fought match 38-24. Now a couple years older and just a little bit more mature, these Kentwood Seniors left with a 72-6 trouncing of KM. The coaches want to thank all of our Seniors for the time they spent in our programs, and in our lives. We hope that you have had as much fun as we have (minus the buddy runs), and we look forward to seeing you come back and help the next generation of Kentwood wrestlers. Our Seniors are: John Michael Daniel (captain), Garrett Johnson, Dan Glomski, Travis Heist, Shawn Larsen (captain), Scott Omahen, Kyle Byrd, Tyler Biggs, Merton Nanquilada, Michael Laird, Alex Phillips, Kellan Hale, Frankie Wilcher, Rusty Phillips, and Peter Logar. Thanks for all of your hard work! KW won the two biggest matches of the night at 135 and 145 pounds. Senior Dan Glomski beat his KM opponent by dominating on his feet, and Lance Larsen beat his KM opponent by scoring a crucial nearfall in the 2nd round. Our next action is the JV Tournament at Thomas Jefferson HS and the Freshman Tournament at Auburn HS, which are both on Saturday. The Varsity is getting ready for the postseason, which starts with the league tournament at Auburn HS next Friday, Feb. 3rd and continues on until Saturday, Feb. 4th. 1-23-06 Conks earn Gold at Jag Invite; Larsens, R. Phillips, Shewey 1st The Kentwood wrestling team won their second straight tournament, outscoring tournament host Emerald Ridge (current SPSL South leader, 6th place finisher in state last year) 226-199. The Larsen brothers picked up where they left off against Tahoma by both securing championships. Shawn (140) made quick work of all three of his opponents, wrestling for a combined 2 minutes, 31 seconds. Lance (145) started to get into postseason form, distancing himself from his Hanford opponent in the finals 9-3. Rusty Phillips (215) pinned his opponent in the finals after surviving a late surge from his ranked Hanford opponent in the semis. Justin "The Big Shew" Shewey put on an offensive show with a 12-4 victory in the finals and his first tournament championship. The following wrestlers made the finals, but just came up a bit short in their championship run: Brandon Rodgers (103), John Michael Daniel (119), and Dan Glomski (135). Other placers were: Stephen Cameron (103, 3rd), Colton Werner (103, 4th), Eric Alonzo (103, 5th), Cody Quinn (112, 3rd), Josh Kutterer (125, 4th), Jacob Logar (130, 4th), Luke Angevine (152, 6th), Alex Phillips (160, 4th), Merton Nanquilada (171, 6th), Frankie Wilcher (189, 4th), and Alec Jones (275, 4th). The Varsity Records and Statistics are now updated, and can be viewed on the stats/records page. 1-20-06 Surprise! KW upends Tahoma, thumps improved KR The Kentwood wrestling team shocked Tahoma on Thursday, 43-30, to move into a tie for 3rd place in the league. This came one day after a 64-12 beating of an improved Kentridge team. While several wrestlers left with wins against KR, the wins were not as easy to come by against Tahoma. Dan Glomski kicked off a KW winning streak with a major decision over a favored opponent. The Larsen brothers were in sync, both earning first round pins against their Bear opponents. Shawn (140) ended his match at 1:09 in the first period, while Lance (145) ended his at 1:55 in the first period. Freshman Luke Angevine (152) won his second straight dual meet, with a 12-10 overtime victory over a heavily favored opponent. Joel Phillips (171) added to the KW score by getting revenge and even pinning a Tahoma opponent that had tech. falled Joel earlier in the year. Peter Logar (275) eclipsed even Joel's feat by pinning the #1 ranked Heavyweight in the league, in a major upset. Peter and Joel's wins were two of the biggest factors in winning the meet. Brandon Rodgers and Cody Quinn both earned pins at 103 and 112 respectively, to finish off the scoring for the Conks. 1-17-06 KW Conquers Westburg Invite; Quinn, S. Larsen (OW) 1st The Kentwood Wrestling team won their first tournament of the year, outdistancing host Ellensburg High School 236-199.5. The Conks placed an astounding 18 wrestlers in the tournament, led by 5 finalists. Dan Glomski made the finals at 135, but lost a tough match 10-4. Scott Omahen reached the finals at 145, but injured his arm in an earlier match and defaulted in the finals. Justin Shewey looked liked he was going to win his first tournament, even maneuvering behind his opponent with not very much time left on the clock. But the situation fell out of Justin's favor, falling to his back and to a 6-1 loss. Cody Quinn earned his second championship of his freshman campaign, by outlasting a returning 4th in state finisher, 9-8. Cody secured a takedown with about 10 seconds left to win the match against the very unhappy returning placer. Shawn Larsen cruised to his first championship of the season at 140, with a 31 second pin over Ramos from Eisenhower. In addition to the victory, Shawn was given the Outstanding Wrestler (OW) Award for the tournament between 103-140. The following wrestlers earned third place: Brandon Rodgers (103), Stephen Cameron (103), Josh Kutterer (125), Ryan Patterson (130), Lance Larsen (145), Joe Angevine (160), Joel Phillips (171), Frankie Wilcher (189), Rusty Phillips (215), and Peter Logar (275). Cody Quinn, Shawn Larsen, Lance Larsen, Alex Phillips, Joel Phillips, and Peter Logar all managed to get wins against AR. Cody beat state alternate Kyle Hammack 6-5 on his way to team high 16th win. Lance grinded out a 4-0 win, while Joel beat up on his AR opponent through a seemingly endless number of takedowns, 24-13. Peter and Alex are two of the frontrunners when it comes to pinning this year, and they showed it on Wednesday night by earning falls during their matches. Alex had his opponents shoulders down for approximately 30 seconds when the referee finally agreed to end the match. Peter went out and handled his opponent, scoring another first round pin. Josh Kutterer showed some real determination by not getting pinned by freestyle and greco national champion Mike Mangrum. Josh even frustrated Mangrum enough to elicit a few questionable shots from the national champ, with one even meriting a penalty point. KW travels across the mountains to the home of the Central Washington Wildcats, Ellensburg (the meet is at Ellensburg High School), where both Coach Sroka and Coach John Anderson attended. Former wrestlers Leon Wrobeleski and Brandon Hunter currently attend CWU. 1-6-06 Tale of Two Duals; KW beats Sumner, Dismantled by Auburn For Kentwood, it really was the best of times and the worst of times as the Conks split back-to-back duals against Sumner and Auburn. The Varsity went to work on the Spartans on Wednesday night with a 62-14 Victory. Lance Larsen won the match of the night, putting Zach Grant to his back almost immediately, and then finishing off Grant with a pin with 18 seconds left in the first round. Kentwood traveled to Auburn on Thursday, but ended up taking their second loss on the year, 49-12. Rusty Phillips earned a fall at 215, while John Michael Daniel (119) and Justin Shewey (275) both earned decisions over their Trojan opponents. Auburn brought 4 returning state finalists to the meet, and look to be the the team to beat in the SPSL North and maybe even the state. 1-2-06 Pac Coast Lives up to Reputation; Quinn, R. Phillips Place The Pacific Coast Tournament was billed as the toughest in Washington state, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The match of the night did not involve KW, but it was noteworthy nonetheless. Returning state champ Andrew Johnson from Tahoma lost on a last second head-and-arm to Derek Driscoll of W.F. West high school, after having the match in hand 8-5 with less than thirty seconds left. You can see this video and more finals action by clicking here, then clicking "finals pictures." Only two of the KW varsity placed in the tournament, which was stacked with state placers at every turn. Freshman Cody Quinn, coming off of his first high school championship at Shelton, finished 5th at Pac Coast. Cody's only two losses were to a state champ from Washington, and a state finalist from Oregon. Cody has been making his name known around the state, and is now ranked at 112 pounds. Rusty Phillips also put together a solid tournament placing 6th after being just a point away from being in the finals. Lance Larsen, Justin Shewey, and Brandon Rodgers all made it to the second day as well, being left just outside of the placing round. Lance also has jumped up to being ranked at 145, and looks to have a great second half of the season. The Conks start back up with league action this week against Sumner at home on Wednesday, and then travel to Auburn on Thursday. 12-26-05 KW Gears Up for Pac Coast; Brackets Posted Kentwood is getting prepared to bring its Varsity team to this year's Pacific Coast Championships held at Battleground High School (click for directions from KW) in Vancouver, Washington. The lower weights again shined, with Eric Alonzo going 3-0 against some bigger opponents. 12-15-05 KW Wins First "Throwdown" 28-21 over Kentlake The Kentwood wrestling team showed enough heart to keep from getting pinned in some crucial matches to take home the first "Covtown Throwdown" match between Kentwood and Kentlake, 28-21. Several KW wrestlers won key bouts, capped off with Captain John Michael Daniel's victory over a tough KL opponent at 119. A gassed Dan Glomski got the Conks on the board at 140, and Rusty Phillips added to total with a fall at 215. This weekend the Varsity is at Shelton, and the JV is at River Ridge. 12-14-05 Varsity 9th at Blaine; JV 2nd at FP The Kentwood Wrestlers competed in the always tough Blaine “Battle at the Border” Tournament on December 9th and 10th. Seventeen wrestlers saw action and Kentwood ended the tournament placing 9th out of the 26 teams entered. Kentwood finished with three placers, the highest being Lance Larsen at 145. Lance wrestled well all day and ended the day placing 4th in this loaded field. Other placers for the Kentwood team were Scott Omahen also at 145 placing 6th, and, Alex Phillips at 152 placing 6th. On the day many Conks won matches with many being by pin. Freshmen Cody Quinn, Luke Angevine and Joe Angevine all won matches in their first Varsity tournament. The JV battled hard as well, earning a 2nd place for Kentwood on Saturday. The Kentwood team took home 13 champions, 14 second places, 5 thirds, and 1 fourth while many Conks found themselves pinning their way through the tournament. 12-8-05 Kentwood Splits First Set of Duals against AM, Enumclaw The Kentwood Wrestling Team opened up the season with a sound 75-0 victory over the Auburn-Mountainview (0-2) in the first dual match in their history. The Kentwood Team looked a bit rusty, but managed to earn several pins and wins along the way. The dual against Enumclaw (2-0) did not fare as well, as the Conks missed several opportunities in a 39-16 loss. John Michael Daniel, Dan Glomski, Kellan Hale, and Peter Logar all earned victories over some tough Hornet opponents. Kentwood looks to rebound with a strong showing over the weekend at the Battle of the Border Tournament held at Blaine H.S., which features several of the top teams in the state. 11-30-05 Conks Place 2nd at Beamer; Aub-Mt. View, Enumclaw up next In their first competitive
action of the year, the Kentwood wrestling team advanced to the
finals of the Beamer Takedown Tournament to dual against the Tahoma
Bears. The Bears won a close one, but the overall match count
was even at 7-7. Several wrestlers went undefeated on the day
at both the Varsity and JV levels. On the Varsity, the
following wrestlers went 3-0: Stephen Cameron (103), Dan Glomski
(135), Nick 11-21-05 Varsity Spots up for Grabs After one week, the Conqueror wrestling team looks loaded with over 70 wrestlers. All Varsity and JV spots are up for grabs, with some real log jams at certain weights. The middle of lineup is particularly stacked, with the likes of super sophs Nick Zografos and Lance Larsen fighting for spots alongside veterans Shawn Larsen (two-time state place winner), Alex Phillips, and brother Joel Phillips. 6-30-05 Kent Wrestling Camp a Hit This year's camp featured great instruction from some of Kentwood's elite alumni. Grant Nakashima (2nd '04, 4th '03) led campers through his legendary set of tilts, while Jarrett Tomalin (2nd '05) showed just what it takes to get up off of the bottom. Coach Ken Sroka brought out his trademark funk, showing how to earn falls from all positions. The camp-ending tournament had some exciting matches, with a few even making it to double-OT. But the prize everyone was after was captured by Billy Creighton, this year's Mushroom Ball Champion. Coach Kendall Anderson was hobbled by a knee injury which cost him this year's title, but he vows to be back next year.
4-2-05 Future Conks Shine in Middle School Tournament Two of Kentwood's feeder programs had good showings at the Middle School Wrestling Tournament held here at Kentwood High School. Meridian Middle School finished in 4th place, with several placers throughout. Mattson Middle School finished a close 2nd in a back-and-forth battle with Tahoma Junior High. Eric Alonzo (85) was Meridian's lone champion, with a close 5-3 decision over Teddy Zografos of Mattson. Mattson had 5 champions, starting at 102 pound champ Cody Quinn. Quinn pinned Tahoma's Bradley Hwang just over a minute into the second round to claim his second consecutive championship. 108 pound Mike Reber narrowly escaped a late run by Tahoma's John Buban, 10-8, to give Mattson their second individual champion. The championship run picked up with the Angevine brothers at 138 and 145 pounds. Luke cruised to a 15-1 major decision over Alex McMahon from Cedar Heights. Joe followed up his brother's performance with a definitive 6-0 shutout over Jason Dudley from Tahoma. Hunter Blackmore (167) finished Mattson's night, upsetting number one seed Greg Smith from Meridian with a 6-5 decision. Both wrestlers battled it out all match, with Blackmore emerging with the victory. 2-19-05 Kentwood Presence Felt at State The Kentwood Conquerors were well represented at this years state tournament, with four wrestlers escaping an extremely tough region. Jarrett Tomalin (125), Shawn Larsen (140), Rusty Phillips (189), and Ian Staaleson (215) all won their first matches at state to start off the tournament in dominant fashion. Phillips and Staaleson did not end up placing, but both had outstanding seasons and wrestled some great matches throughout the year. Tomalin and Larsen both reached the semifinals, with Tomalin prevailing in dramatic fashion over previously unbeaten Jonny Gilbertson of Cascade to reach the finals of the state tournament. Larsen lost another close match to eventual champion Kurt Swartz of Auburn, and then lost his next match on a questionable call in the last seconds of the match. He went on to take 5th place for the second straight year, beating a familiar face in Tully Smith of Stanwood, 7-6. Tomalin wrestled in the finals against Luke Chesher of Central Valley, and lost a hard-fought 3-0 decision. Tomalin was the Cinderella of the tournament, earning recognition in several papers and message boards across the state for his journey to the finals. Kentwood placed 15th in the tournament, a high place for only bringing four wrestlers. This extremely young team looks to place even higher next year.
