KW needs you on team at North Idaho Camp, 6/28-7/2

Many Kentwood wrestlers are planning on attending camps this year to help make KW a state championship caliber team.  One camp that several team members are interested in is the North Idaho Wrestling Camp held in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on Thursday, June 28- Monday, July 2nd.  It is an awesome experience, and you can get upwards of 20 live, officiated matches in the span of a week!  It is a bit expensive ($295), but this covers all of your instruction, lodging, and food and drink for the week.  Coaches John Anderson, Kendall Anderson, and Jarrett Tomalin all attended this camp in high school and it proved to be very beneficial in their careers as wrestlers.   Coach Tomalin plans on taking a group of KW wrestlers here (that includes next year's 9th graders), but he must have at least 8 guys to form a team.  Let us know by posting a message here (on our message board) so that we can make this a reality!

History Lesson: Kentwood Wrestling through the years

As Kentwood's 25th anniversary of its inception approaches, the coaching staff thought it would be interesting to take a look back at some of the notable and outstanding performances in Kentwood history.  Kentwood has been fortunate to have some amazing head coaches in its history.  In fact, there are only three head coaches to ever run the KW program.  Jack Henderson, currently a Kentlake counselor, started off the Kentwood program in the 1982-83 season.

He soon added a co-head coach to the program named Lee Reichert, who happens to be the current Enumclaw wrestling coach.  Reichert and Henderson were responsible for building the program, which reached its pinnacle in the early 1990's with an improbable three straight state championships from 1990-1992.  Making this task even harder was their participation in the toughest league in state.  In their three state championship years, KW only won a league title once; Auburn and Kent-Meridian were state powerhouses at the time as well.  Auburn took 2nd to KW in 1990, and won the state title in 1994.  Kent-Meridian won the state title in both 1987 and 1989.  That is 6 state championships for the SPSL in the span of 8 years!  The state championship teams were led by several members of the Kentwood team, but no one was as dominating as three-time state champion Jason Cleverly.  Cleverly was an amazing mat wrestler; his 29 pins his senior year (in 33 matches) could be an unbreakable record.  He preceded that number with 27 pins as a Junior.  His sophomore year he wrestled and beat teammate (and fellow sophomore) Vann Belvoir in the finals at state, marking one of the only times teammates have wrestled for a state title.  Cleverly was a lanky wrestler who dominated the lower weights (101, 108, 115) during his career at KW.  In fact, Kentwood dominated the lower weights in the late 80's and early 90's with 6 state champions between 1989 and 1994 from 101-115 pounds.  After a short fall from dominance, coach Ken Sroka from Illinois took over in 1997, and has been the head coach ever since.  Coach Sroka has kept the state placer tradition alive (a state placer every year in its history), with 23 state placers and 6 state champions in his 9 years at KW.  Coach Sroka has brought a balanced attack to Kentwood, changing KW from a purely mat team to a team that has shattered the records for takedowns.  In fact, only one person remains on the top 10 for takedowns- Coach Kendall Anderson, who began helped start the trend when Coach Sroka was an assistant at KW.  In 2001, Kentwood was a half point away from a state championship (finishing with three state champs out of three participants!), and also placed 7th in 2007.  With a whole team returning minus only two Varsity wrestlers (103 pounder Stephen Cameron and HWT Justin Shewey), a state title has now become a possibility again.  Could this be the year that Kentwood returns to the top of the podium?  What are YOU doing to help make this happen?  Coach Tomalin is trying to get a team together to go to a great team camp at North Idaho, but we currently don't have enough to fill our team.  Go to the message board and sign up (this includes incoming freshmen) if you are interested!  Also, all wrestlers are welcome to join the football team and other athletes working out in the gym this summer.  Stay tuned for more information on that!

Help needed Friday at 6pm; MS Tournament Brackets posted

The Kent-Tahoma League Middle School Championships held at Kentwood High School are set for Saturday, March 31st starting at 10 am.  The tournament will showcase the up-and-coming stars of South Puget Sound League, a league that traditionally is one of the best in the state.  Meridian Middle School looks to be the favorite, as they just posted an undefeated regular season (7-0) and boast 5 number 1 seeds.  Several other teams are in the mix, and it looks to be a deep and talented tournament.  Check out our Middle School page here for brackets and tournament history, or click the Middle School icon on the left of this page.  You can also view the information sheet about the tournament by clicking here.  Kentwood wrestlers are needed not only to help out at the tournament on Saturday, but we definitely need you on Friday night at 6 pm to help set-up the tournament.  The more wrestlers we have there, the quicker we can get finished.  All juniors using this tournament as an opportunity to fulfill their community service requirements for the junior project MUST be in attendance on Friday AND Saturday (unless cleared by Coach Sroka).

Rodgers, Quinn, Larsen, Zografos top 10; Freestyle Starts

The 7th place in state Kentwood Conqueror wrestling team had a year to remember.  Milestones included: first undefeated (8-0) league season since 1991, the league tournament champions with 412 points, regional champions, 2 regular season tournament champs (Ellensburg & Emerald Ridge), the first girls' state champ in history, 7th place in state, 10 participants to state (the most since 1991), 3 state placers (most since 2002), and the first 112 pound champion in Kentwood history.  One record also fell, as state champion Brandon Rodgers eclipsed the previous record of 40 wins in a season (2-time state champ Brandon Hunter, 2001), to a new high of 44 wins in one season.  2-time placer Cody Quinn also broke Hunter's record to move into 2nd place on the single season wins list with 41.  3rd in state Lance Larsen tied for 5th place on the single season list for wins with 36, tied with state champ Matt Boyovich and Coach Kendall Anderson.  The top 10 finishers included: Brandon Rodgers (1st, 44 wins; 3rd 62 nearfalls; 6th, 19 pins), Cody Quinn (2nd, 41 wins; 10th, 18 pins), Lance Larsen (5th, 36 wins), and Nick Zografos (2nd, 138 takedowns).  View all the All-Time leaders on our stats/records page.  Not only did KW do well individually (view all team stats, Varsity and JV on the stats page), but they were on a tear as a team as well.  Click the pictures above to see just how our team stacked up against our opponents this year...some of the stats are a true reflection of just how hard we work!  The banquet this year went off without a hitch, thanks to our incredible group of parents.  Special thanks to the Quinns, who really took charge of making this a great banquet.  You can see who won our awards on the stat page as well.  Freestyle has already started, and several Conks are currently attending practice and participating in tournaments.  Freestyle is a great way to get more mat time without worrying about wins and losses.  Brandon Rodgers went from a regional participant as a sophomore, to a STATE CHAMPION as a junior, due in part to his off-season wrestling.  How much better could you be if you were out working right now?  Is your goal to be a state champion?  Could next year be our year to make a run at a state championship as a team?

State Champ Rodgers, 3rd Placers Quinn, Larsen lead KW to 7th; Navejas (1st), Crook-Meyers (2nd) push to 4th

The Kentwood Wrestling team finished off their season on a high note, emerging as the 7th place team in all of 4A at this past weekend's Mat Classic XIX.  The Conks took 10 wrestlers to state, but the rigors left only 3 Conks standing on Saturday.  Brandon Rodgers led the way with a 9-2 victory over Kamren Bitney of Puyallup in the finals to be crowned as Kentwood 10th State Champion of all-time.  Brandon fell behind 2-0 early, but came back in force in the third round with a well-timed Peterson Roll that put the match away.  All that was left at that point was a lot of celebrating, but Rodgers wasn't done yet.  He added in a couple of turns to put the exclamation point on his state championship.  Cody Quinn avenged a quarterfinal loss to Matt Palmer of Moses Lake with a 10-4 victory over the Chieftan in the consolation finals.  This keeps Cody's chances of being Kentwood's first 4-time placer alive as he is halfway there with two places in the last two years.  Lance Larsen overcame an injured shoulder to advance to the semifinals with a 4-1 win over John Gallagher of Emerald Ridge.  After a loss in the semifinals to returning champ Eric Starks of Battleground, Lance rebounded with a big pin to get to the consolation finals, and then yet another win over Gallagher for a hard-fought 3rd place finish.  By placing, these young men are now a part of the KW Hall of Fame which is now updated here.  Other state participants were: Stephen Cameron (103), Derek Lipp (103), Josh Kutterer (130), Ryan Patterson (140), Nick Zografos (145), Luke Angevine (152), and Justin Shewey (285).  The girls definitely held their weight this weekend too, as the two-person squad of Antonia Navejas (112) and Jolene Crook-Meyers (130) each reached the finals to vault the Lady Conks to a 4th place finish as a team.  Antonia had no score closer than 11-1 as she became one of 9 girls to become state champs for the first time in Washington history, while Jolene fell just short in her final match.  Congrats girls!

Conks win Regional Title, Advance 10 to State

The Kentwood wrestling team won the regional title this past weekend at Thomas Jefferson H.S., outscoring league rival Kentlake 186.5-173.5.  The Conks also advanced a region-high 10 wrestlers to this weekend's State Tournament.  The Conks have the third most wrestlers in the state going to the state tournament, and have the most since KW's Three-peat of state titles in the early 90's.  6 Conquerors reached the finals of the tournament, while Brandon Rodgers (112), and Cody Quinn (125) both won their first Regional Title.  Brandon did not have a final match, as his Tahoma opponent was under the weather and forfeited to Brandon.  Cody met up with Aaron Smith of Kent-Meridian for the fourth time this year, and with similar results as Cody thrashed the explosive Smith 13-1.  This will be Cody's 2nd trip to the state tournament, as he placed 5th at 112 pounds as a freshman.  Derek Lipp lost a close match to Jesus Valdez of Kent-Meridian in the finals at 103 pounds, to give him the second seed heading to state.  Stephen Cameron defaulted in the 3rd/4th place, but is still advancing to state for the first time.  Josh Kutterer (130) pulled off the biggest upset of the night, winning a thrilling match in the final ten seconds against Tony Heinz of Kentridge to advance to state.  He then won his 3rd/4th place to take the third seed going into the state tournament.  Ryan Patterson (140) reached the finals at regionals before losing to a very tough Kentridge opponent.  Nick Zografos (145) lost to the eventual regional champion in the semifinals, but bounced back through some tough competition to finish in the third place.  Lance Larsen (152) defaulted in the finals to Andrew Johnson to finish 2nd.  Luke Angevine (152) may have been the surprise of the tournament, as he lucked into the tournament after another wrestler did not make weight.  He made the most of his opportunity, taking out the 1st seed from the Kingco along the way to a third place finish.  Justin Shewey is the final entrant to the state tournament, as a number two seed to Decatur's Tevin Tillman.  Tony Creveling (135) and Joe Angevine (171) both took fifth place to become alternates to the state tournament.  Antonia Navejas (112) and Jolene Crook-Meyers (130) also advanced to the Girls' State Tournament by both taking home regional championships.  Congratulations girls!  Kentwood looks to improve on the last year's finish this Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome (view brackets here), we hope to see you all there!

Sroka, K. Anderson Coaches of the Year; Brackets posted

The Kentwood coaching staff received two well-deserved awards during last week's league tournament, as Coach Ken Sroka was named Head Coach of the Year in the SPSL North, and Coach Kendall Anderson was named Assistant Coach of the Year as well.  This is Coach Sroka's first time as the Coach of the Year, despite placing 22 wrestlers in the past 10 years, with 5 champions and 8 finalists altogether.  Coach Kendall Anderson earned his award for the second time in his 8 years here at Kentwood.  On another note, the Conks look to keep their momentum going at Regionals this Saturday at Thomas Jefferson High School.  The regional brackets can be viewed at the Washington Wrestling Report (click here).

KW SPSL N Tournament Champs by 150 points! 3 champs, OW

The Kentwood Wrestling Team finished off a perfect league season by demolishing the competition at the SPSL North League Championships.  The Conks scored 412 points, outdistancing the rest of the field by more than 150 points!  This was due to KW's great depth and top-level talent, as the Kentwood sent 10 wrestlers to the finals and placed 22 wrestlers altogether (view final brackets here).  The Conks crowned three first time champs, Derek Lipp (103), Brandon Rodgers (112), and Cody Quinn (125).  Derek and Stephen Cameron started the finals off for the Conks with a very close finals match, with Derek coming out on top 2-1 (we currently have over 300 pictures on the photo page from just this tournament!).  Brandon Rodgers started off slow in his finals match against freshman Tyler Lamb of Tahoma, but came out with his guns blazing in the third round, sticking the younger wrestler in a very tight cradle to register the fall.  Cody Quinn kept the streak alive, despite being ill the entire week.  He dominated Aaron Smith of Kent-Meridian to the tune of a 15-5 major decision, which earned him not only the league championship, but the lower weight Outstanding Wrestler Award as well.  Other finalists for the Conks included: Josh Kutterer (130), Ryan Patterson (140), Nick Zografos (145), Lance Larsen (152), Nathan Herrick (215), and Justin Shewey (285).  Other placers included: Colton Werner (112, 6th), Blake Thompson (119, 5th), Billy Creighton (125, 6th), Alex Hough (130, 5th), Tony Creveling (135, 4th), Joe Allen Reonal (135, 6th), Ryan Scarff (140, 6th), David Laird (145, 5th), Luke Angevine (152, 5th), Joe Angevine (171, 3rd), Spencer Brewer (171, 6th), and Josh Loveland (189, 4th).  Altogether, the Conks will send 13 wrestlers (the top four placers) to next week's Region II tournament at Thomas Jefferson High School.

Brackets are up; Cameron, Rodgers, Quinn all claim top seed

The brackets for this weekend's SPSL North League Championships are now up on our results page.  Three Conks earned the top seed (103 pound #1 seed Stephen Cameron is pictured on the right), while several others were in the top four.  The JV was also well-represented, as Kentwood was the only school to fill all 14 weights with two wrestlers.  Wrestling starts at K-M at 5 pm on Friday, and will pick up with the semifinals at 10 am on Saturday.

KW downs Tahoma, KM on way to 2nd league title ever!

This past Wednesday the Conks traveled a whole two miles to face previously undefeated Tahoma in a matchup to decide the league championship.  Tahoma had knocked off Kentlake the week before to set up this championship match, while Kentwood had beaten its previous 5 opponents as well.  The match started off with a pin by Ryan Patterson at 140 pounds, giving the Conks an early lead.  2 consecutive wins by Tahoma gave them a short lived lead, as Lance Larsen (160) majored his Tahoma opponent and Joe Angevine (171) handed his wrestler a loss as well.  After a loss at 189, the Conks went on a little streak with 4 straight wins: Nathan Herrick (215), Justin Shewey (285), and Derek Lipp (103) all pulled out close wins, and then Brandon Rodgers (112) earned a fall with the cradle pictured to the right (courtesy of the Seattle Times/Jim Bates).  Cody Quinn took down Kevin Tao in overtime to win his match, while Josh Kutterer showed his penchant for close matches with yet another 1 point win to round out the scoring for KW, 34-23.  The score was fairly close, but Kentwood did win 9 of the 14 matches on the night.  On Thursday KW wrestled at KM in their last dual of the season.  The Conks won this one easily, with a 59-7 final score, to finish 7-0 on the season.  Falls were earned by: Josh Kutterer (130), Tony Creveling (145), Joe Angevine (171), and Nathan Herrick (215).  Despite taking 1st in state 3 times, 2nd place once, and 4th place three times, this is only Kentwood's 2nd league title ever!  Congratulations guys!

Seniors dominate Senior Night; KW is ER Tourney Champs

The Kentwood Wrestling team beat Kentridge soundly, 51-9 this past Thursday  This was no ordinary night though, as it is the last time the Seniors would wrestle for Kentwood at home.  Senior night got off to a great start as both Kyle Baskin and Alec Jones earned pins on the JV.  Justin Shewey beat fellow ranked heavyweight Leroi Edwards in the first match of the night 7-3, while Stephen Cameron beat his opponent 5-2.  On the night, our 4 seniors all came out victorious, a great end to some dual meet careers.  Brandon Rodgers, Cody Quinn, Nick Zografos, Lance Larsen, Joe Angevine, and Nathan Herrick all earned pins in the rout over KR.  The night before the Conks squeezed out a tough win over a much improved Decatur team, 35-25.  KW was led by falls from Brandon Rodgers and Josh Kutterer and tech falls from Stephen Cameron and Cody Quinn.  The Conks then took the short drive down to Puyallup to wrestle in the Jaguar Invitational at Emerald Ridge High School.  The Conks were behind going into the final round, but finished with another Tournament Championship on the backs of 8 finalists.  Brandon Rodgers won his 4th tournament in a row, while Cody Quinn and Nick Zografos each won the third tournament in a row.  Other finalists were: Stephen Cameron, Blake Thompson, Ryan Patterson, Luke Angevine, and Joe Angevine.  Other placers were: Gurjit Saini (112, 3rd), Teddy Zografos (119, 4th), Tony Creveling (135, 4th), Nathan Herrick (215, 3rd), and Justin Shewey (285, 3rd).  Kentwood faces Tahoma for the league title tonight (Wednesday) at Tahoma.

KW wins Ray Westberg Invite with 5 champs, 11 placers, OW

This past Saturday the Kentwood wrestling team traveled east to Ellensburg to compete in the Ray Westberg Invite at Ellensburg High School.  The Conks built off of last weekend's success, running away with the 1st Place trophy while scoring 218.5 points thanks to outstanding performances by several team members.  The four champions from last week repeated this week, and Brandon Rodgers (112) added his third title in a row by beating Kenny Sanders from Ellensburg 9-4 in the finals.  Brandon has now improved his record to 26-1 on the season (stats are updated), and is making a big push towards the postseason.  The next champ was at 125 pounds, as Cody Quinn controlled his final match 4-1 over Henry Hernandez from Quincy.  Cody looked to be on the top of his game all day, overpowering his opponents in all facets.  Nick Zografos (145) continued KW's winning ways with a 10-8 win over Jack Calvert of Othello.   Nick again dominated his opponent on his feet, and is currently sitting at 86 takedowns for the year with a good chance of getting back on the top 10 all-time list for takedowns.  Lance Larsen not only won the title at 152 pounds, but as recognized as the upper weight Outstanding Wrestler!  Lance has been on a roll lately, with this past win being a solid 4-2 victory over Thomas Johnson from Ellensburg.  Luke Angevine (160) picked up his first tournament championship this weekend, punctuating his win with a pin over Cameron Cartwright of Kittitas in the finals.  Ryan Patterson (140) took out the number one seed from Selah to make his first finals appearance, but came up just short to take 2nd place.   Stephen Cameron (103) and Josh Kutterer (130) both wrestled really well on their way to 3rd place finishes, while Blake Thompson (119), Joe Angevine (171), and Nathan Herrick (215) rounded out the placers by all taking 5th place.  Kentwood has 4 duals, 1 Varsity Tournament, and 2 JV Tournaments left on the schedule.

Rodgers, Quinn, Zografos, Larsen all Champs; KW 62, TJ 9

The Kentwood wrestling team starting off the week in dominating fashion, beating up on a young Thomas Jefferson team 62-9.  Pins were recorded by Brandon Rodgers (112), Blake Thompson (119), Josh Kutterer (130), Ryan Patterson (140), Lance Larsen (160), and R.J. Gilbert (215).  The Conks then traveled up to Snohomish High School to compete in the Panther Classic.  Kentwood walked away with four champions, who all turned in outstanding performances.  Brandon Rodgers kept his hot streak alive, with a 16-1 thrashing over Andrew Walt of Cascade to add his second 1st place medal in two weeks.  Cody Quinn pinned his way through the tournament in what was supposed to be one of the toughest weights at the tournament, finishing the day off with a third round fall over Dawson Patrick of Mt. Baker.  Nick Zografos took out Shawn McDonald of Kamiak in the finals with a 10-8 final, claiming his first championship of the year.  However, Lance Larsen may have been the biggest story of the tournament at 152 pounds.  After fighting through an 8-6 overtime win in the quarterfinals, Lance would go on to beat the #2 seed handily 12-5, and then avenged an earlier loss to the #1 seed by a score of 10-2.  Kentwood only placed two other wrestlers, both at 103 pounds.  Steven Cameron lost a hard-fought match in the finals to place 2nd, and Derek Lipp suffered a loss to the same opponent in the semifinals to finish 3rd.  Overall the Conks finished 6th at the Panther Classic, but hopefully picked up some steam on their way to Ellensburg this weekend.  To see brackets of the Panther Classic, either go to the RESULTS page, or click this direct link.

KW 1-2 in duals; Rodgers only 2nd KW Pac Coast Champ ever

The Kentwood Wrestling team squared off with three of the top teams in Washington over a two day blur, emerging 1-2 with a short handed team.  The week started off with a narrow 35-34 loss to Rogers, but the team wrestled extremely well.  Nick Zografos had the biggest win of the night, with a major decision over a very tough Michael McAllister.  Zografos controlled the entire match, notching several outstanding takedowns.  On Thursday, Enumclaw and Auburn visited the main gym at KW for a double dual with Tahoma and KW.  Enumclaw matched up with the Conks well, and showed some outstanding depth, beating KW 34-23 followed by a 56-9 shellacking of Tahoma.  The match of the dual was Brandon Rodgers beating Jason Gray from Enumclaw (3rd in state last year).  This is a testament to how hard Brandon has worked this summer, and this year in the practice room.  The Conks then controlled state powerhouse Auburn with a swift 44-25 victory.  Pins by Brandon Rodgers, Cody Quinn, Nick Zografos, Luke Angevine, and Joe Angevine paced the Conks on their way to a big win over an old SPSL nemesis.  The Conks then traveled to Vancouver on Friday and Saturday to compete in the toughest tournament in the state this year, the Pacific Coast Championships.  This is a 35 team tournament that featured some incredible wrestlers, and even some nationally ranked wrestlers.  The team wrestled well on their way to a top 10 finish.  Even more impressive was the work put in by Junior Brandon Rodgers this weekend.  Brandon dominated the competition at 112 pounds this weekend, leaving late Saturday night as only the 2nd Pac Coast Champion in KW history.  Brandon's biggest match was his quarterfinal match against Jason Gray of Enumclaw, where Brandon improved on last match's narrow decision with a second round pin against the former placer.  Brandon later went on to beat Mike Turner of Auburn Riverside in the finals 9-8 to complete the sought after win.  Congratulations Brandon!  The Conks placed 6 wrestlers altogether, with Cody Quinn, Nick Zografos, and Lance Larsen all earning 4th place while beating several tough wrestlers along the way.  Justin Shewey injury defaulted to 6th place, but only after beating the number one seed in the tournament.  Freshman Nathan Herrick was injured as well, defaulting to 8th place.  That is quite a tournament, and Nathan becomes the third freshman placer in Kentwood history following in the footsteps of Nick Zografos (2004) and Cody Quinn (2005).  The Conks pick up league action tonight against the Thomas Jefferson Raiders.

Conks dismiss Falcons 33-28, take home trophy & league lead

The Kentwood Varsity took down the Kentlake Falcons 33-28 to improve to 2-0 on the season.  This highly contested match came down to the last match, but the groundwork for the win was laid early by several Conks.  Josh Kutterer helped Coach Sroka pull out some of his hair as he let a 11-3 lead almost vanish as he was thrown to his back in the last period.  He escaped with the win however, as he showed heart staying off of his back.  Ryan Patterson put up 6 points for KW with a late match fall against Kyle Schaefbauer of Kentlake.  Nick Zografos looked to be in the same form that netted him over 100 takedowns as a freshman, even finishing off his young opponent in the second round with a pin.  Luke Angevine (pictured above with the baseball bat grip) overcame the strength of his KL opponent to earn a 10-4 victory.  At 215, freshman Nathan Herrick put senior Jay Weinbrecht to his back in the first few seconds and even had the senior pinned when the referee stopped the match for an illegal hold.  The senior came back but fell short as our freshman won a key match.  At 285, the Falcons went with a strange approach sending out their normal 189 pound wrestler to battle Justin Shewey.  Despite losing an early takedown, Shewey dominated the overmatched Jared Walsh 9-6.  Brandon Rodgers stepped up with a quick pin in the first round, and Cody Quinn finished off the night with a well-controlled 4-0 victory.  This was Kentwood 2nd "Covtown Throwdown" trophy, and their 8th straight win over the Falcons.  This vaulted the Conks into a tie for the division lead with Tahoma.  This weekend the Varsity is at Shelton, and the JV is at River Ridge.

The Kentwood Varsity got off to a fast start against Federal Way on Wednesday and never let up, finishing off the Eagles with a score of 72-0.  Pins by Billy Creighton, Joe Allen Reonal, Luke Angevine, and Greg Smith paced the Conks who really got after it on their feet.  The Varsity then made the long trek up to Blaine to compete in the very tough Battle at the Border Tournament.  The Conks survived some early round woes to finish a respectable third at the tournament.  The places were as follows: 2nd- Luke Angevine, 3rd- Brandon Rodgers, 4th- Stephen Cameron, Cody Quinn, Ryan Patterson, and Greg Smith, 5th- Lance Larsen.  The 9th and 10th grade dual team won all three matches in route to a 1st place finish at the Auburn-Mountainview duals.  The JV also had 13 champions at this past weekend's tournament at Franklin Pierce.  Several wrestlers won their first matches of their KW career....Congratulations!  Kentwood looks to win their second dual meet of the season on Wednesday @ KW in the much hyped "Throwdown in Covtown" against the Kentlake Falcons.  A possible league title may be won in this early-season matchup.

Pictures Monday 2:30; Cert Tuesday 4:30; 4 Conks Ranked

The team and individual pictures have been moved to Monday, December 4th at 2:30 (be there on time!).  Certification is now on Tuesday, December 5th at 4:30 (half an hour before practice as well).  In other news, 4 Conquerors made the Washington Wrestling Report's Top Ranked Wrestlers in the November edition, although at some questionable weights.  Brandon Rodgers saw his name called at 103, although it appears he will be wrestling 112.  Cody Quinn is ranked as the top 119 pound 4A wrestler, but his calling seems to be at either 125 or 130.  Nick Zografos looks to be the only ranked wrestler at his actual weight, 145, despite losing last year to an injured knee.  Lance Larsen rounds out the 4 at 152 pounds, with his true weight now hovering somewhere around 160 pounds.  Congratulations on the recognition guys...now it is time for all of us to show what we can do on the mat!

Rodgers & Cameron 2nd at State FS; Navejas, Crook Ranked

Brandon Rodgers made his way through a very difficult weight to go 3-1 and take 2nd place at 105 pounds in the State Freestyle Tournament this past weekend.  Brandon has had an excellent spring so far, placing and winning many tournaments.  In the process he has made a name for himself around the state, and many are looking at him as one of the favorites at his weight for next year.  Stephen Cameron has been very active this freestyle season, and he also took home a 2nd place medal in this year's State Freestyle Tournament.  The "Troll" has provided great depth for KW the past two years at 103, and looks to break out in '06-'07 with his own spot in the lineup.  Also, Antonia Navejas is ranked 8th nationally among women at 114 pounds, while Jolene Crook is ranked 3rd nationally at 138!  These two freshmen are the first females to be ranked from Kentwood, and are two of the highest ranked girls in Washington.  As the freestyle season begins to wind down, we would like to thank all of the wrestlers that found time this spring to improve their wrestling.  The next step are summer camps, beginning the week after school gets out with the Kent Wrestling Camp.

Meridian adds title to perfect season; Tournament a success

The Meridian Monarchs won their first tournament in almost 30 years this past weekend at Kentwood High School, just a week after finishing the regular season 7-0.  The Monarchs, coached by Dan Wright and Eric Werner, outdistanced the surprising Cedar Heights team 249.5 to 238.  Meridian crowned 3 champions: Derek Lipp (90), Alex Hough (122), and Daniel Park (220).  Mattson took fourth place with 214 points, taking home 4 titles: Hayden Peterson (115), Andy Smith (138), Nathan Herrick (190), and Alex Verhaar (250).  The Middle School Page is now updated with final brackets, team scores, and several pictures.  If there is a picture that you would like a higher quality version, email John Anderson with the Page and Picture #.  The future continues to look bright for the Conquerors with the additions of many outstanding wrestlers from the middle schools.  On another note, the tournament ran very smoothly this year due to the help of several incredible individuals.  The Kentwood Coaching Staff would like to especially thank the Phillips Family, the Quinn family, the Daniel family, the Delvo family, the Larsen family, the Anderson family, the Sroka family, Kathy Massimino, and of course our wrestlers.  We hope that this continues to be a tournament that teams enjoy being at, and because of all of you that it ran well.  Thanks for all of your work!

Brandon Rodgers captured an elusive 3 style championship at Chehalis this past weekend.  Brandon won three 105 pound championships; one in freestyle, one in greco-roman, and one in folkstyle.  Brandon has been leading the way with fellow freestylers Stephen Cameron (who participated in two styles this weekend), Cody Quinn, and Joe Allen Reonal.  Several KW wrestlers have also been attending the Bear Claw practices at Tahoma Jr. High in addition to those 4 wrestlers.  Other wrestlers who have been putting in their time at Bear Claw are: Josh Koopmans, Ryan Patterson, Sean Staaleson, Matt Thake, Eric Bala, R.J. Gilbert, and Lance Larsen.  Attention!  The Kent Tahoma League Middle School Tournament is coming up on April 1st.  We are still in need of wrestlers and parents to help with the event.  If you are can help out on that Saturday, please e-mail Coach Sroka or Coach John Anderson.

Quinn cleans up at Banquet; Seniors leave legacy

The Kentwood Wrestling Banquet turned out to be a great success.  The meal put on by the parents was excellent, and no wrestler (or coach) was left hungry.  The decorations at each table made this the classiest banquet yet.  When the awards time came, Freshman Cody Quinn found himself repeatedly making his way up to the front.  Quinn took home Most Valuable Wrestler, Underclassmen of the Year, and also garnered stat leader medals in Wins, Nearfalls, and Reversals.  This made him a rare three medal winner, accomplished by very few in Kentwood History.  It also marks the first time that a freshman has won the Most Valuable Wrestler Award.  Justin Shewey brought home the "Firehorse of the Year" Award, a prestigious Click here to see our stats! award that has been rarely awarded to an Underclassman.  Coaches Kendall and John Anderson both won this award in their careers, and are happy to see the tradition passed down to such a hard worker.  Co-underclassman of the year was given to sophomore Lance Larsen on his 27-9 year, and Lance looks to turn that record into a place at state next year.  Co-Freshman of the Year was given the Angevine brothers, Luke and Joe based on an outstanding freshman year that meant Varsity time at pretty heavy weights.  Most Improved went to sophomore Josh Kutterer, for his vast improvement throughout the year and the improvement he made from last year.  Dan Glomski took home the medal for most escapes, and even cracked the top 10 all-time list.  Alex Phillips left the banquet with a medal for his 17 pins he had throughout the year.  To view our final statistics, visit the stats page.  To check out a chart of our statistics compared to our opponents, check out the Stat Chart by clicking the picture above.  Team Captains John Michael Daniel and Shawn Larsen also left with their Captain Awards, and said some great things about the program in their closing comments.  We will miss having such great leaders in our program, and we want them to know that they have raised the bar on what it takes to be a captain.  For all graduating seniors, we wish you the best in whatever you do.  Make sure you come back and visit and let us know how you are doing.

Banquet Thurs (3/9) 5:45 pm; Quinn, Cameron, Rodgers excel

The Banquet has been officially listed as starting at 5:45 pm this Thursday, March 9th. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance.  In the Rhino Open Freestyle tournament this weekend, Cody Quinn picked up where he left off taking home a first place medal at 125 pounds in the Cadet division.  Stephen Cameron added to the lightweight trophy case by taking 2nd place among Juniors at 112 pounds, while Brandon Rodgers took third in the Cadet division at 105 pounds.  Be sure to check out the photos page, as there are some pictures taken from the past weekend of our guys in action at the FS tournament.  We would love to see as many guys get involved in the freestyle season, as it will be beneficial for your wrestling progress.  Click the Bear Claw link on the right, or go here to check out the Freestyle club.

Bear Claw on Mon. and Wed.; Banquet March 9th

Q: How do you get better at wrestling?  A: You wrestle more!  The freestyle season starts up tonight at Bear Claw from 6:30 pm to 8 pm,  and you can still sign up at the door.  The cost of the club is a very reasonable $70.  This is your chance to not only get more experience, but also to wrestle with some of the best kids in the area!  Two-time state champ Andrew Johnson, three-time state placer Tyler Roshau, and many others will be in attendance.  Helping coach with the Tahoma staff is former champion Michael Johnson, who only lost two high school matches!  There will be kids from all skill levels however, so it is a great way to get some practice time in with some really fun guys.  Brandon Rodgers spent the past weekend with the Bear Claw team at the Hawkeye Invite in Anacortes, and left with a first place medal!  Congrats Brandon!  To view practice and tournament dates (there is a tournament every weekend that you can go to and have the Bear Claw coaches with you) either go to the Bear Claw link on the right side of the page, or click here to go directly to the schedule (for March).  On a different note, the banquet celebrating this year's season will be on Thursday, March 9th in the cafeteria.  The time will be set soon, so make sure to check back for more info!

One-man show Quinn 5th; KW's first freshman placer ever

Kentwood only brought one wrestler to state, but freshman Cody Quinn was up to the challenge taking home a hard-fought 5th place medal.  Cody started the day with a senior from Eastmont named Joel Robbins.  Robbins proved to be too much in Cody's first match, soundly beating Cody 10-1.  Cody rebounded with a 7-0 drubbing of fellow freshman Jared Kilcup of Heritage, and then a 2nd round pin of sophomore Kamren Bitney of Puyallup to end the first day and secure Cody a medal and a place in the Kentwood Hall of Fame.  Cody advanced in his first match on Saturday, outlasting senior Gabe Gassman of Curtis, 4-2.  This put him in a consolation match with Robbins again.  Cody faired much better this time, but still lost 4-2.  This put Quinn into the consolation final match for 5th and 6th place, against phenom freshman Sam Ottow from Monroe.  Many predicted Ottow to get to the finals, and some even predicted Ottow to win a highly contested 112 pound weight class.  Ottow earned an 11-7 win over Cody last week, but Cody could not be denied in a triumphant 8-6 win over Ottow and a 5th place finish at one of the toughest weights at the tournament.  The real "phenom" turned out to be Quinn with a 5th place finish as the first freshman state participant and first freshman state placer in Kentwood's storied history.  By placing, Cody also kept the KW streak of placers alive for the 18th year.  Congratulations Cody!  We are all really proud of you!  Also, thanks must go out to all of the wrestlers who stuck it out until the end, giving Cody fresh wrestling partners to work with.  Make sure to keep posted for freestyle, camp, and banquet information!

Region 1 K.O.'s Conks; Only Cody Quinn survives

A rough Friday doomed the Conks, with all 9 wrestlers entering Saturday with at least one loss.  For some, a difficult draw ended their tournament, while others were done in by injuries.  Only 1 Conqueror escaped a grueling Region 1, and that was freshman Cody Quinn.  His path was no free ride either, as he had to deal with one of the top-ranked freshmen in the entire state, Sam Ottow of Monroe.  Cody lost 11-7 to Ottow, but a couple of calls that went Ottow's way help secure that victory.  Cody then faced Sam Bauer of Enumclaw in a loser-out match, which Cody grinded out 4-2 despite some last second heroics from Bauer.  Another win over highly touted Kevin Tao of Tahoma got Cody into the 3rd/4th match against John Baldwin of Kamiak, which Quinn won handily.  Seniors Shawn Larsen and Peter Logar placed 6th to make them alternates to the state meet, while sophomore Brandon Rodgers placed 7th and senior Rusty Phillips placed 8th.

Conks impress on way to 3rd at SPSL Tourney; 9 advance

The Kentwood Wrestling Team took 3rd place at the toughest division tournament in the state over this past weekend.  They finished ahead of projected top 10 teams Auburn Riverside and Tahoma, outdistancing both teams by more than 75 points.  The Conks also finished more than 50 points ahead of the Cinderella Kentlake team.  Kentwood advanced 9 wrestlers to the Region I tournament (click for info) at Jackson H.S. in Mill Creek, which is a two-day tournament spanning over Feb. 10 and 11.  In all Kentwood placed 14 of the 26 wrestlers it brought to the tournament, and will bring 4 alternates to regionals in addition to the 9 already set in the tournament.  Those 9 wrestlers are: Brandon Rodgers (3rd), Cody Quinn (2nd), John Michael Daniel (3rd), Josh Kutterer (4th), Dan Glomski (4th), Shawn Larsen (2nd), Joel Phillips (4th), Rusty Phillips (4th), and Peter Logar (2nd).  The other placers were: Stephen Cameron (5th), Tony Creveling (6th), Lance Larsen (5th), Alex Phillips (5th), and Justin Shewey (5th).  This marks the Conquerors highest finish at the league tournament in several years.  Region I brackets are now available online at Washington Wrestling Report.  ***Note:  We are staying at the Days Inn on Everett Mall Way, directions from KW to the hotel are here.

KW trumps Royals on Senior Night, 72-6; Postseason Next

The Seniors of Kentwood left their last dual meet the same way they started their careers here at Kentwood--victorious.  In their first dual meet as Kentwood wrestlers in 2002 against Auburn-Riverside, Kentwood won a hard-fought match 38-24.  Now a couple years older and just a little bit more mature, these Kentwood Seniors left with a 72-6 trouncing of KM.  The coaches want to thank all of our Seniors for the time they spent in our programs, and in our lives.  We hope that you have had as much fun as we have (minus the buddy runs), and we look forward to seeing you come back and help the next generation of Kentwood wrestlers.  Our Seniors are: John Michael Daniel (captain), Garrett Johnson, Dan Glomski, Travis Heist, Shawn Larsen (captain), Scott Omahen, Kyle Byrd, Tyler Biggs, Merton Nanquilada, Michael Laird, Alex Phillips, Kellan Hale, Frankie Wilcher, Rusty Phillips, and Peter Logar.  Thanks for all of your hard work!  KW won the two biggest matches of the night at 135 and 145 pounds.  Senior Dan Glomski beat his KM opponent by dominating on his feet, and Lance Larsen beat his KM opponent by scoring a crucial nearfall in the 2nd round.  Our next action is the JV Tournament at Thomas Jefferson HS and the Freshman Tournament at Auburn HS, which are both on Saturday.  The Varsity is getting ready for the postseason, which starts with the league tournament at Auburn HS next Friday, Feb. 3rd and continues on until Saturday, Feb. 4th.

Conks earn Gold at Jag Invite; Larsens, R. Phillips, Shewey 1st

The Kentwood wrestling team won their second straight tournament, outscoring tournament host Emerald Ridge (current SPSL South leader, 6th place finisher in state last year) 226-199.  The Larsen brothers picked up where they left off against Tahoma by both securing championships.  Shawn (140) made quick work of all three of his opponents, wrestling for a combined 2 minutes, 31 seconds.  Lance (145) started to get into postseason form, distancing himself from his Hanford opponent in the finals 9-3.  Rusty Phillips (215) pinned his opponent in the finals after surviving a late surge from his ranked Hanford opponent in the semis.  Justin "The Big Shew" Shewey put on an offensive show with a 12-4 victory in the finals and his first tournament championship.  The following wrestlers made the finals, but just came up a bit short in their championship run: Brandon Rodgers (103), John Michael Daniel (119), and Dan Glomski (135).  Other placers were: Stephen Cameron (103, 3rd), Colton Werner (103, 4th), Eric Alonzo (103, 5th), Cody Quinn (112, 3rd), Josh Kutterer (125, 4th), Jacob Logar (130, 4th), Luke Angevine (152, 6th), Alex Phillips (160, 4th), Merton Nanquilada (171, 6th), Frankie Wilcher (189, 4th), and Alec Jones (275, 4th).  The Varsity Records and Statistics are now updated, and can be viewed on the stats/records page.

Surprise! KW upends Tahoma, thumps improved KR

The Kentwood wrestling team shocked Tahoma on Thursday, 43-30, to move into a tie for 3rd place in the league.  This came one day after a 64-12 beating of an improved Kentridge team.  While several wrestlers left with wins against KR, the wins were not as easy to come by against Tahoma.  Dan Glomski kicked off a KW winning streak with a major decision over a favored opponent.  The Larsen brothers were in sync, both earning first round pins against their Bear opponents.  Shawn (140) ended his match at 1:09 in the first period, while Lance (145) ended his at 1:55 in the first period.  Freshman Luke Angevine (152) won his second straight dual meet, with a 12-10 overtime victory over a heavily favored opponent.  Joel Phillips (171) added to the KW score by getting revenge and even pinning a Tahoma opponent that had tech. falled Joel earlier in the year.  Peter Logar (275) eclipsed even Joel's feat by pinning the #1 ranked Heavyweight in the league, in a major upset.  Peter and Joel's wins were two of the biggest factors in winning the meet.  Brandon Rodgers and Cody Quinn both earned pins at 103 and 112 respectively, to finish off the scoring for the Conks.

The Kentwood Wrestling team won their first tournament of the year, outdistancing host Ellensburg High School 236-199.5.  The Conks placed an astounding 18 wrestlers in the tournament, led by 5 finalists.  Dan Glomski made the finals at 135, but lost a tough match 10-4.   Scott Omahen reached the finals at 145, but injured his arm in an earlier match and defaulted in the finals.  Justin Shewey looked liked he was going to win his first tournament, even maneuvering behind his opponent with not very much time left on the clock.  But the situation fell out of Justin's favor, falling to his back and to a 6-1 loss.  Cody Quinn earned his second championship of his freshman campaign, by outlasting a returning 4th in state finisher, 9-8.  Cody secured a takedown with about 10 seconds left to win the match against the very unhappy returning placer.  Shawn Larsen cruised to his first championship of the season at 140, with a 31 second pin over Ramos from Eisenhower.  In addition to the victory, Shawn was given the Outstanding Wrestler (OW) Award for the tournament between 103-140.  The following wrestlers earned third place: Brandon Rodgers (103), Stephen Cameron (103), Josh Kutterer (125), Ryan Patterson (130), Lance Larsen (145), Joe Angevine (160), Joel Phillips (171), Frankie Wilcher (189), Rusty Phillips (215), and Peter Logar (275).  The following wrestlers earned fifth place: John Michael Daniel (119), Luke Angevine (152), and Merton Nanquilada (171).

Conks lose close one to undefeated AR, next stop is E-burg

Kentwood lost in a heartbreaker to undefeated Auburn-Riverside on Wednesday, 34-28.  Cody Quinn, Shawn Larsen, Lance Larsen, Alex Phillips, Joel Phillips, and Peter Logar all managed to get wins against AR.  Cody beat state alternate Kyle Hammack  6-5 on his way to team high 16th win.  Lance grinded out a 4-0 win, while Joel beat up on his AR opponent through a seemingly endless number of takedowns, 24-13.  Peter and Alex are two of the frontrunners when it comes to pinning this year, and they showed it on Wednesday night by earning falls during their matches.  Alex had his opponents shoulders down for approximately 30 seconds when the referee finally agreed to end the match.  Peter went out and handled his opponent, scoring another first round pin.  Josh Kutterer showed some real determination by not getting pinned by freestyle and greco national champion Mike Mangrum.  Josh even frustrated Mangrum enough to elicit a few questionable shots from the national champ, with one even meriting a penalty point.  KW travels across the mountains to the home of the Central Washington Wildcats, Ellensburg (the meet is at Ellensburg High School), where both Coach Sroka and Coach John Anderson attended.  Former wrestlers Leon Wrobeleski and Brandon Hunter currently attend CWU.

Tale of Two Duals; KW beats Sumner, Dismantled by Auburn

For Kentwood, it really was the best of times and the worst of times as the Conks split back-to-back duals against Sumner and Auburn.  The Varsity went to work on the Spartans on Wednesday night with a 62-14 Victory.  Lance Larsen won the match of the night, putting Zach Grant to his back almost immediately, and then finishing off Grant with a pin with 18 seconds left in the first round.  Kentwood traveled to Auburn on Thursday, but ended up taking their second loss on the year, 49-12.  Rusty Phillips earned a fall at 215, while John Michael Daniel (119) and Justin Shewey (275) both earned decisions over their Trojan opponents.  Auburn brought 4 returning state finalists to the meet, and look to be the the team to beat in the SPSL North and maybe even the state.

Pac Coast Lives up to Reputation; Quinn, R. Phillips Place

The Pacific Coast Tournament was billed as the toughest in Washington state, and it definitely lived up to the hype.  The match of the night did not involve KW, but it was noteworthy nonetheless.  Returning state champ Andrew Johnson from Tahoma lost on a last second head-and-arm to Derek Driscoll of W.F. West high school, after having the match in hand 8-5 with less than thirty seconds left.  You can see this video and more finals action by  clicking here, then clicking "finals pictures."  Only two of the KW varsity placed in the tournament, which was stacked with state placers at every turn.  Freshman Cody Quinn, coming off of his first high school championship at Shelton, finished 5th at Pac Coast.  Cody's only two losses were to a state champ from Washington, and a state finalist from Oregon.  Cody has been making his name known around the state, and is now ranked at 112 pounds.  Rusty Phillips also put together a solid tournament placing 6th after being just a point away from being in the finals.  Lance Larsen, Justin Shewey, and Brandon Rodgers all made it to the second day as well, being left just outside of the placing round.  Lance also has jumped up to being ranked at 145, and looks to have a great second half of the season.  The Conks start back up with league action this week against Sumner at home on Wednesday, and then travel to Auburn on Thursday.

Kentwood Splits First Set of Duals against AM, Enumclaw

The Kentwood Wrestling Team opened up the season with a sound 75-0 victory over the Auburn-Mountainview (0-2) in the first dual match in their history.  The Kentwood Team looked a bit rusty, but managed to earn several pins and wins along the way.  The dual against Enumclaw (2-0) did not fare as well, as the Conks missed several opportunities in a 39-16 loss.  John Michael Daniel, Dan Glomski, Kellan Hale, and Peter Logar all earned victories over some tough Hornet opponents.  Kentwood looks to rebound with a strong showing over the weekend at the Battle of the Border Tournament held at Blaine H.S., which features several of the top teams in the state.

After one week, the Conqueror wrestling team looks loaded with over 70 wrestlers.  All Varsity and JV spots are up for grabs, with some real log jams at certain weights.  The middle of lineup is particularly stacked, with the likes of super sophs Nick Zografos and Lance Larsen fighting for spots alongside veterans Shawn Larsen (two-time state place winner), Alex Phillips, and brother Joel Phillips.

Kent Wrestling Camp a Hit

This year's camp featured great instruction from some of Kentwood's elite alumni.  Grant Nakashima (2nd '04, 4th '03) led campers through his legendary set of tilts, while Jarrett Tomalin (2nd '05) showed just what it takes to get up off of the bottom.  Coach Ken Sroka brought out his trademark funk, showing how to earn falls from all positions.  The camp-ending tournament had some exciting matches, with a few even making it to double-OT.  But the prize everyone was after was captured by Billy Creighton, this year's Mushroom Ball Champion.  Coach Kendall Anderson was hobbled by a knee injury which cost him this year's title, but he vows to be back next year.

Future Conks Shine in Middle School Tournament

Two of Kentwood's feeder programs had good showings at the Middle School Wrestling Tournament held here at Kentwood High School.  Meridian Middle School finished in 4th place, with several placers throughout.  Mattson Middle School finished a close 2nd in a back-and-forth battle with Tahoma Junior High.  Eric Alonzo (85) was Meridian's lone champion, with a close 5-3 decision over Teddy Zografos of Mattson.  Mattson had 5 champions, starting at 102 pound champ Cody Quinn.  Quinn pinned Tahoma's Bradley Hwang just over a minute into the second round to claim his second consecutive championship. 108 pound Mike Reber narrowly escaped a late run by Tahoma's John Buban, 10-8, to give Mattson their second individual champion.  The championship run picked up with the Angevine brothers at 138 and 145 pounds.  Luke cruised to a 15-1 major decision over Alex McMahon from Cedar Heights.  Joe followed up his brother's performance with a definitive 6-0 shutout over Jason Dudley from Tahoma.  Hunter Blackmore (167) finished Mattson's night, upsetting number one seed Greg Smith from Meridian with a 6-5 decision.  Both wrestlers battled it out all match, with Blackmore emerging with the victory.
